Jah No Partial

Sometimes when I need extra motivation I pick a song that helps me get excited, one that gives me that extra kick. I think it's a thing people do all the time. Like when you're running and the lactic acid is burning and you just need a little nudge to get you over that last mile. One of my go to songs is Jah No Partial by Major Lazer. The song is great for many reasons, but I only have space to talk about one of them right now.

What really gets me is the lyrics. Loosely translated: Jah no partiall means to God is not partial; I think that's an idea familiar to people of most faiths, and even people of no faith. The idea that there is no special interest deciding that any of us is greater or lesser than the others is a very powerful and life-affirming idea the way I see it. Just like we own our failures, it means we own our successes. Sometimes I want to look for something outside of myself as the cause of my missteps, but I can usually trace it back to something I did. Same with successes. There's usually something you did right to help you get there. Figure out what it is, and reinforce that behavior.

I'm thinking about motivation because I'm trying to write my personal statement for my application to Dietetic Internships (which I will explain somewhere else) but sometimes it's hard to sit there and focus on myself to really see who I am. You have to look at the bad with the good. It's not fun, but then I remember Jah No Partial, and I htink we all have less desirable qualities interspersed with our desired ones, and it's up to us to decide which ones get amplified and which get obscured. So here's to self discovery. If you have any songs that help you amp up for the day, or a task, let me know, I'm always looking for more inspiration.
